VanVed vs Shopify
for Marketplace checkout
Why businesses choose VanVed over Shopify
A many-seller cart is native: one buyer payment, line items split by store, commission computed per line on verified payment, and each seller sees only their own items on a shared order. The gateway is real Razorpay — signature verification and a signed webhook, both idempotent — which matters because Shopify Payments does not work in India at all. Coupons and abandoned-cart recovery, both missing from earlier versions of this page, now exist.
Capability by capability
Every row below is what our 2026 research found — including the rows we lose.
| Capability | VanVed | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Real payment gateway | Razorpay, wired end to end — order creation, signature verification and an HMAC-checked webhook | Shopify Payments is not available in India, so a third-party gateway plus a 0.2-2% Shopify fee on top |
| Guest checkout | No — the cart is one row per user account, so a buyer must register first | Yes, one-page guest checkout |
| Discount codes | Per-seller codes with flat or percent value, validity window, minimum order and use caps that only burn on a verified payment | Native discount engine plus automatic discounts |
| Abandoned cart recovery | A reminder job that emails through each seller's own configured provider, idempotent per cart and seller | Native abandoned-checkout automation |
| Shipping rates | None — shipping_total is hardcoded to zero at checkout | Flat and weight-based rates; carrier-calculated rates on Advanced and Plus |
| Tax handling | One flat platform-wide percentage on the discounted subtotal — no per-product GST rate, no HSN, no CGST/SGST split | Automated tax for US, Canada, EU and UK; India is manual rate entry there too |
| Fulfilment and tracking | An order stops at paid — there is no shipped or delivered state and no tracking number field | Fulfilments, carrier tracking and a customer order status page |
| Refunds and returns | A refunded status exists on the model but no endpoint ever sets it | Self-serve customer returns and refunds from the admin |
| Multi-vendor commission | Per-seller or platform commission computed per line item on payment, with a seller payout statement | No native multi-vendor; Collective requires Shopify Payments so it is unavailable in India |
Where Shopify is ahead of us today
Checkout charges zero shipping — the field is hardcoded — so any physical seller has to build the cost into the item price. Tax is one flat platform rate with no per-product GST or HSN. There is no guest checkout: a buyer must create an account before they can buy. And after payment the order simply stops — no shipped or delivered state, no tracking, and no way to issue a refund even though the status exists.
We publish this because a comparison that only flatters us is worth nothing to you. If one of these gaps is the thing you actually need, Shopify may well be the better buy.
