VanVed vs Odoo MRP
for Manufacturing
Why businesses choose VanVed over Odoo MRP
For a small workshop, VanVed's manufacturing is genuinely usable on day one: define a recipe, raise an order, complete it, and stock moves through the same audited ledger the rest of the business already uses. The multi-level explosion shows true raw-material demand down the sub-assembly chain, and the work-centre schedule answers "is Tuesday over capacity?" — which is more planning than most tools at this price level offer.
Capability by capability
Every row below is what our 2026 research found — including the rows we lose.
| Capability | VanVed | Odoo MRP |
|---|---|---|
| Bill of materials | BOM with component lines, circular-reference protection, multi-level explosion shown on the BOM and the order | Multi-level BOMs, kits, phantom BOMs, variants and BOM versions |
| Work orders, routings and operations | A production order is a single step — no routing, no operation sequence, no per-operation tracking | Routings with ordered operations, work-order start/pause/finish and a tablet shop-floor view |
| Work centres and capacity | Work centres with daily capacity hours and a live over/under-capacity schedule view | Work centres with capacity, efficiency, OEE and cost per hour |
| Stock consumption on completion | Completion consumes components and produces the finished item atomically, refusing on short stock | Same, plus reservations, partial consumption and backflushing options |
| Material requirements planning | Exploded requirements are compared against stock at the order's location and the short materials listed — on the API only, and nothing raises a purchase order | Replenishment engine turns demand into purchase or manufacturing orders automatically |
| Scrap and yield | Actual quantity produced and scrap are recorded on completion, and the scrap posts as a wastage movement — but components are still consumed at the planned BOM quantity, and the web app cannot send either figure | Scrap orders, component loss, and actual vs planned quantity produced |
| Subcontracting | Not built | Subcontracted BOM type tracking components sent out and finished goods received |
| Setup cost and fit for a small maker | One toggle inside a platform the business already runs; no per-app seat licence | MRP is a paid app per user on top of Inventory, and usually implemented with a partner |
Where Odoo MRP is ahead of us today
Odoo MRP is a real manufacturing system and VanVed is not yet. There are no routings or operations, so a production order cannot be tracked step by step on the floor; an order that produced 95 of 100 units can now be recorded honestly, with the scrap posted as a wastage movement — but only through the API, since the completion screen sends neither figure, and the components come out at the planned quantity regardless; there is no subcontracting; and while short materials are now listed against an order, nothing turns them into a purchase order, so replenishment is still done by eye.
We publish this because a comparison that only flatters us is worth nothing to you. If one of these gaps is the thing you actually need, Odoo MRP may well be the better buy.
What VanVed's Manufacturing module does
- Bills of material
Define what a finished product is made from — raw materials and quantities per unit.
- Production orders
Turn a bill of material into a production order that consumes raw stock and produces finished-goods stock.
